Life as an Advocate

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

Hello! My name is Bridgette and I am a second year at UC studying environmental engineering, and I work as a Sustainability Advocate. The reason I wanted to become an advocate was due to my passion for the environment. I also had a previously existing tendency to educate my friends and family on environmental issues. I thought, if I’m already using my free time to talk about sustainability, why not do it with people who feel the same way and under a bigger platform within our community?

I first started becoming passionate about the environment in high school. I took Spanish class all four years, and during the last two years we began using class time to discuss global current events utilizing Spanish language skills. Those current events often included environmental issues such as pollution (polución), climate change (cambio climático), deforestation (deforestación), and many others. My teacher had a deep passion for these topics, and that passion began to rub off on me. I began researching more on my own about the issues human society posed on Earth and its biodiversity. Before educating myself, I did not realize how severe and deep rooted these issues were that posed a threat to the natural world. I knew environmental issues were important, but I was blind to the true scale of these threats and just how dangerous they can be. With that, I became passionate about learning how to mitigate these issues by implementing sustainable solutions in society and culture.

This passion has followed me into my college years, and I continue to use it as fuel to motivate my efforts to be a sustainability advocate within our community. I have enjoyed working programs that raise awareness of environmental topics, and I love working with others who share this passion to make the world a better place.

Best,

Bridgette
