For this week's article on sustainable businesses across Cincinnati, we highlight some of the coffeehouses that have been doing things in a sustainable manner over time. As the consumption of coffee increased rapidly in the last few decades across North America and Europe, coffee farming, a once uplifting form of agriculture in the countries that harnessed it, now faces a dwindling fall on the sustainability front due to businesses prioritizing large scale production and short-term profits. Many of these coffee-producing countries in South America suffer from a lack of fair wage practices and with unstable coffee prices, result in a direct impact on the economic stability of the farmers and a lack of social infrastructure development to necessitate sustainable farming. With gender inequality in pay and child labor still largely present, the environmental impact due to unsafe practices and the effects of varying rainfall due to climate change equally affect coffee farming communities. With a multitude of issues surrounding coffee farming, the way forward is to promote coffeehouses that support the mitigation of these issues in both small and large scale. Some of these Cincinnati coffeehouses target different aspects of these plaguing issues!
