Reducing Waste When Moving

Updated: Mar 11, 2021

It's that time of year again! Many people are transitioning living situations as leases end/start, and that means getting rid of a lot of stuff. But before you just dump it all into the trash can only to end up in the landfill, consider a few other options to help reduce waste and even help others.

Traditionally, UC Sustainability has operated the annual Uptown Waste Diversion program to help movers in the uptown Cincinnati area ensure at least some of their belongings end up somewhere other than the landfill. Often times, this meant either recycling (regular recycling as well as textiles and metals) or donation to St. Vincent de Paul - an organization that helps vulnerable populations obtain necessities and shop on a budget. The multi-day event has diverted tons of waste and put them in better places. Although the event is not occurring this year, fear not! You can still reduce your waste and carbon footprint with our guide!

Whether you have furniture, clothing, hygienic items, cookware, electronics, or food, there is a place it can go other than the garbage can. Check out this infographic on where to donate what in the uptown area, including St. Vincent de Paul, GoodWill, New 2 U Thrift, and the Bearcat Food Pantry:

Also, before getting rid of something, ask yourself if it can be fixed, reused, or repurposed. This is the foremost step in reducing your waste. But if it can be better used be someone else, go ahead and donate! And if you can't donate, call Public Services at 513-591-6000 to help you out!

Happy moving, reducing, reusing, and recycling!
